Market House in Newcastle has reached completion, with student accommodation operator Fresh Student Living having accepted its first tenants.
Market House is a student residential scheme consisting of 225 study bedrooms with 180 sqm of ancillary accommodation at the ground floor. The development sits on the northern edge of Newcastle City Centre, on the vacant site of the former Market Street Police Headquarters. The development also restores the rear boundary wall of the Grade II Listed St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and Presbytery. The clean lines, deep reveals and geometry of the building together with the restrained palette of high quality materials makes a positive contribution to Market Street.
The building responds to the scale of its neighbours and completes the street ‘wall’. A strong active frontage is formed with the location of a management suite, laundry and common areas at street level. The main entrance is expressed by a deep reveal and given emphasis with increased verticality and massing in the facade above.
Windows to study bedrooms are set into deep, angled reveals of limestone affording views along the street.
To the south, fingers of accommodation extend towards St. Andrew’s Church. This presents a similarly strong boundary to Erick Street, informed by the boundary line of St Andrew’s Church. The fingers of accommodation define courtyards of amenity space for residents.
